| VMKVEC - Department of Mechanical Engineering |
The Mechanical Engineering Department was started
in the year 1987 along with the inception of the college, with
Machine shop, Engineering Practice lab, Dynamics, Metallurgy,
Metrology and Thermal Engineering laboratories. The department
has been certified by ISO 9001 - 2000 in the
year 2004 for the quality deployment. The department possesses
a good team of well qualified, experienced and hard working
faculty members with industrial, teaching and Research background.
The department has well equipped laboratories and workshops
having the latest machineries, equipments and sophisticated
instruments. The department conducts various programmes like
seminars, conferences, workshops, Symposiums etc. through the
Mechanical Engineering Association for the benefit of the students.
Staff development programmes are also being conducted periodically
to train the faculty members. The |

department competitively catered
to the needs of various universities like Madras University,
Periyar University, Anna University and at present function
under VMU. During the last two decades the department continuously
updates itself by acquiring modern equipments and machineries.
The following are the highlights of the various activities carried
out by the department.
1. A Lecture on "CONDUCT OF LABORATORY CLASSES AND PREPARATION
OF LAB MANUAL" was delivered by Dr.M.Thangavel HOD/ MECH
as a part of FDP on 13th November 2007.
2. A one day course on "ROBOT ARM DYNAMICS" was conducted
on 29th September 2007, the resource person being Dr.M.Thangavel
HOD/ MECH. The topics covered were:
· Overview of robots
· An overview of robot arm kinematics
· Dynamic modeling of robot arm using Lagrange Euler
formulation
· Dynamic modeling of robot arm using Newton Euler formulation
3. A special lecture on "AN OVERVIEW OF MEMS, NANOTECHNOLOGY
& SMART STRUCTURES" was presented by Dr.M.Thangavel
HOD/ MECH on 17th September 2007 for both staff and students.
4. The faculty members of the department delivered lectures
on 20 different advanced topics for all the three years students
on 17th September 2007. |

5. A staff development programme was conducted
for 3 days, the resource persons were Dr.K.R.Govindan, Dr.Chidambararajan,
Dr.Mrs.RajalakshmiRajagopalan and Dr.SriRengan.
6. Text Books titled Basic Engineering Mechanics and Engineering
Graphics were published by the Mechanical Engineering faculty
for the benefit of first year students of the university during
September 2006.
7. Mechanical Engineering Association function was conducted,
the chief guest was Er.Kumar General Manager of Salem Steel
Plant during August 2006.
8. During February 2006 a mega job fair was conducted in the
campus and near about 5 major companies including Ashok Leyland
participated, conducted interviews, recruited students and gave
placement training. |
9. During February 2004 Mechgrands
function was conducted and chief guest was Dr.Rajendran Controller
of Examination Periyar University.

Dr.Sethupathy Ramalingam VC, Periyar University during September
2003.
20. A National level technical symposium was conducted during
February 2003 and chief guest was Dr.A.Balasubramiam Prof./Dept.
of Production Engg., Annamalai University
21. During the academic year 2000-2001 Mr.T.P.Suresh Kumar Mechanical
Engineering student was selected in IPS examination and during
the same year another student Mr.Ganesh of the same batch be
came rank holder in Periyar University.
22. During September 1997 special lecture was conducted by Dr.Isasc
Rathakrishnan, Industrial consultant on Personality Development
Programme.
23. During the academic year 1996 - 1997 Mr.Karthik Moudgil
Final Mechanical student was selected for IAF. |
